Aspirants between 16 and 25 years of age can apply after 10th as seafarer after qualifying pre sea courses or after 12th as an officer through various degree or diploma courses in mainly two specialized fields, Nautical (Deck) and Marine engineering. Unmarried Female and Male candidate are eligible .The All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) is conducted by Bharat Shipping Limited for admission in various courses in reputed organizations.

The starting pay scales varies from ranks to ranks between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 a month . A person gets added incentives such as free food, accommodation, paid leave and two-way free passage. Foreign companies pay higher, and a starting salary ranges from $ 1,500 to $ 2,500 .
